If you have heady thoughts of speeding down the highway in your supercharged vehicle, then you’ve come to the right place. We asked our gurus on all things cars how to infuse your engine with more power. Read on to see what they had to say.

Two Ways That You Can Increase Your Car’s Overall Torque

Add a Turbocharger
Torque is all about your engine’s ability to breathe air inside the cylinders for fuel combustion. A turbocharger increases your engine’s air intake, improving your torque and increasing your horsepower. It operates by forcing induction into the car’s cylinders to burn up more fuel and generate greater power.

Opt for a Tune
A tune is a device that updates your car’s ECU and changes the instructions about delivering power to the engine. A tune can increase your torque by 20-30 lb-ft and add 15-30 horsepower to any typical car. It requires minimal effort as you just need to place the tuner in the car’s ECU port, which is generally under the steering wheel.

Install a Cold-Air Intake

You can increase the torque of your car by installing a cold-air intake. The airbox installed in your vehicle is restrictive, allowing air to move inwards. Removing this would cause the engine to make a slight noise, increasing the torque significantly. When installing a cool-air intake, you allow more oxygen to flow through the engine. This increase in the oxygen level means that you would now be able to burn more fuel. The modification would cause the torque to increase significantly and help improve throttle responsiveness.

Upgraded Intake Systems

Upgrading your intake system is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve torque. By replacing your stock air filter with a high-flow model, you’ll allow more air to enter your engine. Running more air through the cylinders burns more fuel and creates a bigger bang, which means your car will be able to generate more power. A quality aftermarket air intake system also allows your engine to breathe more efficiently, reducing the strain during acceleration.

Dual-plane Manifold, Superchargers, and Turbochargers

Introduce a dual-plane manifold to increase your car’s torque. Torque is always the buddy on the street as you want torque to handoff smoothly to horsepower at wide-open throttle. A single-plane intake manifold is not as efficient as a dual-plane intake manifold, which offers a great low to mid-range torque and still allows an engine to breathe at high rpm. The dual-plane manifold long intake runners give you the torque and high ceilings for horsepower.

Forced induction systems like superchargers and turbochargers are an easier way to increase torque. They work by compressing the airflow to your engine, offering the best performance increase. A supercharger is powered by a belt that directly connects to the engine while a turbocharger gets its power from the exhaust system. Both are efficient and easier to install, except for a turbo lag presented by the turbocharger which disappears after you feel the power.

Install a Turbocharger

To increase a car’s torque is to increase the amount of air and fuel burned with each stroke. One example of it is installing a turbocharger on your car. This turbocharger will force more air into the combustion chamber, thus improving the efficiency and power output of an internal combustion engine. Turbochargers are also in charge of increasing engine horsepower, which is required to boost torque.

Good Airflow, Mechanical Boost, and Performance ECU Tune or Chip

Good Airflow
Combustion requires more air gas, replacing stock air intakes, intake, and exhaust manifolds, and the exhaust cat-back provides for better airflow thus better combustion

Mechanical Boost
Some engines are capable of handling a turbo or supercharger or both. All setups increase torque.

Performance ECU Tune or Chip
Software changes can be made to the ECU by tuning specialists to adjust engine settings to increase torque and power.
