All tires wear out, but there are steps you can take to prolong their life. Since tires aren’t cheap, a little preventative care can translate into significant savings down the road.
To make your current tires last longer, be sure to tend to the following maintenance procedures:
- Air pressure – Maintaining your tires’ correct air pressure will contribute to their longevity. Car manufacturers recommend specific levels of air pressure depending on the car. Check air pressure at least once a month to prolong the lifespan of your tires. Tires that are either under-inflated or over-inflated will contribute to premature wear and tear. The best time to check air pressure is early in the morning when temperatures are cool. If you have just driven the car, wait several hours before checking so the tires have adequate time to cool down. You may get an inadequate air pressure reading if you check when the air in the tires is too warm.
- Tire alignment –Tire alignment refers to adjusting the angles of the tires to affect the way they make contact with the road. To correct alignment, technicians need to adjust the suspension system of your car. Unaligned tires cause uneven tread wear, reducing the life of your tires. When you bring your car to the shop for alignment, the technician will check all different aspects of your wheels’ alignment, including the camber, toe, and caster. Aligned tires last longer and drive smoother.
- Tire rotation – Tire rotation is important to prevent uneven tread wear, saving you from having to replace your tires sooner than expected. A technician can remove the tires and wheels and switch their placement so they all wear evenly. Tires can be moved from right to left, front to back, or diagonally. Be sure to have your tires rotated regularly.
Though it may feel like a hassle to take your car into the shop for proper tire care, your pocketbook will thank you later when you don’t have to shell out for new tires.
